  Rio Grande Turkey(Melleagris gallopavo intermedia)

Wild turkey are the largest game bird in North America. The Rio Grande subspecies ranges from the central portion of Texas to the southern gulf coastal prairies becoming less frequent in far west Texas and non-existent in deep east Texas.

Wild turkey forage for seeds and insects on the ground during the day but roost high in tall trees at night in order to avoid predators.

Spring is the wild turkey’s breeding season. During this time of the year mature males gobble and strut in order to attract receptive mates. For this reason, spring is a popular season to hunt wild turkey, as they can easily be called into shotgun range.
